West Michigan install windows are tight because lake-effect snow arrives early. Here is how to time your booking around the weather and our crew calendar.
Every West Michigan property owner asks the same question by Labor Day: when should we book the holiday lights? The answer depends less on Christmas and more on what Lake Michigan is about to do.
The West Michigan Install Window
In a normal year, our productive install window opens in late September and closes when the ground freezes hard, usually in the first week or two of December. That gives us roughly ten working weeks to cover Grand Rapids metro, the lakeshore, Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan, and mid-Michigan. Within that window we lose days to early lake-effect events, ice on rooflines, and the first real snowfall.
That math drives everything. If you wait until Thanksgiving to book, your odds of a pre-holiday install drop sharply because crews are already scheduled solid through early December.
Why Book in August or September
Booking by Labor Day means you get first choice of install dates. Booking in September still gives you a comfortable November slot. By mid-October the calendar tightens and we start prioritizing commercial contracts and existing residential clients first.
A large share of our season is repeat customers who lock their dates in early, which means the calendar is already filling before most people start thinking about it. The remaining slots go quickly.
Lakeshore Books Earliest
We sequence the season by snowbelt exposure, not by who called first. Properties in Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Holland, Muskegon, and South Haven sit directly downwind of the lake and can take four to six inches of snow in mid-November. Those zones get scheduled first, and we try to have lakeshore residential complete by Thanksgiving week.
Inland markets get a little more runway. Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Lansing, and Jackson usually stay workable into the first week of December, so those bookings can be made slightly later without risking your date. Grand Rapids metro sits in between.
What Actually Happens On Install Day
For a typical East Grand Rapids or Holland residential install, plan for a four to six hour window with a two to three person crew. We send a confirmation the day before, arrive in branded vehicles, and complete the install without needing you on site the whole time. We email a final photo when the job is done.
For commercial campuses or multi-property HOAs, install day looks more like two to four days depending on scale, with daily coordination through the property manager.
Bottom Line
If you want lights up before Thanksgiving anywhere on the lakeshore, book by August 15. For Grand Rapids metro, book by mid-September. For inland markets like Kalamazoo, Lansing, and Jackson, mid-October still works most years. After that we will do our best but the weather runs the show, not us.
