Ice dams are a real West Michigan winter hazard. How a professional install crew prevents your holiday lights from making the problem worse.
Anyone who has owned a West Michigan home for more than two winters knows what an ice dam is. The ridge of ice that forms along your eaves when snow melts on the warmer upper roof, runs down, and refreezes at the cold overhang. Water backs up behind the dam, finds a way under shingles, and ends up dripping through your ceiling.
Lake-effect snow makes this worse than it is in most of the country. The heavy wet bands that come off Lake Michigan pile up fast, then sit there through repeated freeze-thaw cycles. A bad holiday lighting install can absolutely make ice dams worse. A good one does not. Here is what we do differently.
We Never Penetrate Shingles
Anything stapled, screwed, or nailed into asphalt shingles is a future leak point. Once an installer puts a hole in a shingle, that hole stays. Water finds it. Ice expands inside it.
Every clip and fixture we use is non-penetrating. C7 clips that grip the shingle edge, ridge clips that hook the cap, gutter clips that clamp without screws. Nothing punctures your roof system.
We Route Wiring Out of Valleys
Roof valleys are where snow load concentrates. Snow slides off both adjacent planes and piles in the valley. Wiring laid through a valley gets buried, frozen in place, and pulled hard during melt-and-refreeze cycles. That can rip strands, damage clips, and sometimes pull at shingle edges.
We route around valleys, not through them. Wiring goes up the gable lines, across the ridge, and back down. Cleaner install, less storm stress.
We Watch the Eave Line
Eaves are where ice dams form. We use clip systems specifically designed to release under heavy ice load without damaging the underlying shingle. If a strand gets weighted down by a foot of compacted lake-effect snow, the clip lets go before the shingle does. Then we come out and repair the strand under our in-season service program.
We Flag Pre-Existing Issues During Site Assessment
When we walk a property for the initial assessment, our crew leads look at the existing roof condition. If we see signs of prior ice damming, missing shingles, soft spots, or improper insulation indicators, we flag them in the quote. Sometimes we recommend not running lights in a particular section until the roof issue is resolved. We would rather lose a small piece of the install than be the contractor blamed for a leak we did not cause.
What You Can Do Before We Arrive
Clear gutters of leaves before install day. A clean gutter handles meltwater. A clogged one becomes a dam. If you can have a gutter cleaning scheduled the week before, you will get a better install and a more reliable holiday season.
What To Do If An Ice Dam Forms Mid-Season
Call us. If the dam is affecting our light strands or clips we will come out and address it. We do not perform ice dam removal as a service, but we will release any of our fixtures that are at risk and refer you to a qualified West Michigan ice dam specialist if needed.
